UBTECH Smart Elderly Care Solution honored as the winner of the 2023 Edison Awards™

FORT MYERS, FLORIDA, USA, April 24, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — FORT MYERS, FLORIDA, April 20, 2023– UBTECH, a leading global AI and robotics company, was honored the Bronze award of the 2023 Edison Awards™’ MedTech category for the distinguished innovation of its Smart Elderly Care Solution.

Known as the “Oscars of tech,” the Edison Awards™ is one of the oldest and most prestigious technology awards. It honors the most impactful brands and business leaders worldwide, with past winners including Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, General Motors, and Genentech, recognizing their excellence in service development, marketing, design, and innovation.

All nominations were reviewed by the Edison Awards Steering Committee with the final ballot determined by an independent judging panel. The panel is comprised of more than 3,000 senior business executives and academics from the fields of product development, design, engineering, science, marketing and education, as well as past winners.

UBTECH’s Smart Elderly Care Solution offers an enriched portfolio of intelligent robots to enhance the quality of life for seniors. In addition to using cutting-edge robotics technologies, the solution also leverages advanced artificial intelligence. And through UBTECH’s Smart Healthcare Cloud Platform, the Smart Elderly Care Solution creates a network that enables seamless integration of a variety of devices. This interconnect between hardware, network and people supports the seven key scenarios of smart elderly care: operational management, safety and security, health management, daily care, rehabilitation, mental and physical activities, and nutrition and diet.

“This is the industry’s comprehensive solution that combines advanced robotics and AI technology to assist seniors and their caregivers in nursing homes. Rather than providing services using isolated, individual products, we focus on addressing system-level challenges. By extensively applying AI technology, we vastly improved product performance to bring a richer, more optimized experience to the elderly and caregivers,” Henry Tan, Co-Chief Technology Officer of UBTECH and General Manager of UBTECH Healthcare, says, “It is an honor to have our Smart Elderly Care Solution be recognized by the Edison Awards™.”

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, starting in 2030, all baby boomers will be 65 and older. And by 2034, older adults will outnumber children for the first time in U.S. history. This forecast generates demand for efficient, comprehensive assistive care solutions.

Designed for accessibility, UBTECH’s Smart Elderly Care Solution portfolio accepts a multitude of inputs. Its smart sensors, working in parallel with its data platform, transform care from passive to proactive in assisting with daily tasks. And with rich interactive features, the solution can support seniors’ physical and mental well-being.

Moving into the smart care era, UBTECH provides people with an intelligent, independent, and convenient solution to raise the standard for the elderly care industry. Within the past year, UBTECH has released five service robots: Wassi, an intelligent walking assistance robot; VerCari, a containerized delivery robot; PathFynder, a smart wheelchair; AuCari, an open delivery robot; and Welli, a companion robot.

Due to its utility and innovation, UBTECH’s Smart Elderly Care Solution is garnering international interest. The PathFynder smart wheelchair is now exploring market in North America. In addition, UBTECH has worked with companies and partners to deliver and implement the solution in different facilities and scenarios. These successes are encouraging UBTECH to continue its mission to refine its technologies, pushing the industry forward to promote a higher quality of care.

As UBTECH expands its business globally, it expects to generate higher value and provide higher-quality services for seniors worldwide. By continuing to develop robotics and AI, the company aims to address the long-term challenge for society and create a new industry to boost the global economy.

Anthropologist Professor Emeritus Nukunya goes home

Anthropologist Professor Emeritus Godwin Kwaku Nukunya has been laid to rest in his hometown, Woe, in the Volta Region at the age of 88. It followed a pre-burial service held for him in Accra which attracted people from all walks of life especially the academia and the clergy. Reverend Dr Yohanes Ahiabu, Synod Clerk of the Global Evangelical Church in a sermon during the burial service for the late former Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, admonished all to accept Jesus Christ and to speak to others about Him so they could come to Him. Reading the scriptures from Mark chapter six, he said it was important to have Jesus as one’s Lord and personal Saviour, be good stewards and live the life well to impact society to be guaranteed eternal life even after one’s exit from the earth. Mad Ophelia Aku Mana Ziwu, the widow in a tribute, described her late husband as ‘a man of great character’ who she was privileged to have spent 57 years of her life with saying, though she would deeply miss his presence, ‘the love we shared will always remain in my heart. ‘Your strength of character and dedication to good values have served as a beacon of light that guided not only you, but our entire family and others who were fortunate to know you. ‘In this chapter, without you, I will uphold these morals and never forget them,’ she said. Mr Godwin Elorm Nukunya, the eldest son referred to the late Sociologist as a hero who loved, cared for, and protected him and his other siblings. He recalled instances where the late father encouraged and nurtured his potential as well as the fun times they had together and concluded, ‘I miss you so much Daddy, that I doubt my heart can ever heal.’ Prof Emeritus Divine Amenumey of the Department of History, University of Cape Coast in his tribute, recounted fun times with the late author who he called Kwaku throughout their 64 years of friendship which started from Commonwealth Hall, UG through to the University of London and thereafter. ‘Kwaku regularly regaled us with tales from his Sociology classes and his reading… In fact, Kwaku and I, being closer to each other, developed a joking relationship and called each other by names from the wild animal kingdom.’ Mr Seth C.K. Amedofu, a cousin, called the deceased a family builder, philanthropist, and helper to the poor and needy whose greatest virtues were humility, love, and forgiveness, for which he would be sorely missed. ‘Our last conversation was on Monday, January 2nd, 2023, with a promise for me to visit him on Friday. By January 6, alas! My brother was called by the Lord to glory. My wife, children and I will remember him as he was like a father to us,’ he said. Cameroonians rebuke telecommunication companies for too many promotional SMSs

Sending a subscriber at least five promotional SMSs a day can be frustrating! Some of these promotions are unrealistic and require you to go through many procedures, of which at the end you will spend money.

Many subscribers in Cameroon say this is enough! The companies have resulted in sending them so many text messages which are seemingly useless to them. They say the services are becoming frustrating and annoying and they have started hating the company. This comes on the heels of campaigns for flight mode activation by midday on April 24, 2023, as a protest for poor services in the private telecommunication sector.

“My SMS space is already full because of numerous messages from these telecommunication companies. I am so tired of them and funny enough I can’t be able to unsubscribe from these messages”. A subscriber complained.

“It is so annoying, you buy airtime or data for huge amounts indicated to be used for a month, and within minutes or hours, it’s finished. You even call them to inquire what is happening but no concrete response,” user, Hure Hamidou lamented.

“At times you receive messages to subscribe or dial some codes to win money to stuff and when you dial the codes you discover that they start cutting your mobile data or airtime. I even went to the extent of visiting their office but there was nothing fruitful that came from it. I just hate their services now, if I see a better service I will just switch” Nyah Nicolas said.

So far, MTN Cameroon’s Mobile Money service and Orange Money services are the major services that every Cameroonian is talking about. Just to remind you that these companies are the top private telecom companies in Cameroon.

The services offered by these companies became a threat to local money transfer companies including Express Union which had dominated money transfer in Cameroon for more than 10 years with little competition.

Government pledges emergency response to rain damage

Angolan Executive has pledged to respond to the damage caused by the rains that hit the country from August 15, 2022 to April 21, 2023, with the capital Luanda bearing the brunt of the disaster.

The Executive’s multi-sector team for emergencies and disasters is preparing responses, based on the distribution of food, reinforcement for the creation of shelter and distribution of essential materials for the affected families.

The actions include the de-silting of macro-drainage ditches and a work to raise the awareness of citizens who build in risk areas or on water courses.

Speaking to the press on Monday, the executive secretary of the National Commission of the Civil Protection Service, Manuel Lutango, who did not reveal the amount to be spent, said that during the said period the rains affected 90,528 people across the country.

He put at 332 the number of people killed as result of rain, 649 injured, 4,292 homes damaged and 3,827 destroyed, as well as 1,741 homes inundated.

The provincial government of Luanda started on Sunday the delivery of various goods to the municipalities to support the affected families.

In recent days, 50 people have died, mainly in the provinces of Luanda, Lunda Norte and Cabinda, and more than 450 have been injured due to the heavy rains that have fallen in the country.
