President of Kenya visits GCA Headquarters to mobilize action ahead of Africa Climate Action Summit

Rotterdam, the Netherlands, May 07, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — His Excellency William S. Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, visited the floating headquarters of the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) in Rotterdam today to participate in a Strategic Dialogue on the Africa Climate Action Summit.

The Africa Climate Action Summit is being co-hosted by the Government of Kenya and the African Union Commission on 4th to 6th September 2023, and is co-convened by the African Development Bank and GCA. The visit follows a meeting between Professor Patrick Verkooijen, CEO of GCA and President Ruto in Nairobi in February 2023 where they discussed driving the implementation and financing of climate adaptation through the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP).

GCA, as the only international organisation focused exclusively on climate adaptation, is working closely with the Government of Kenya to mobilize financial commitments for adaptation during the Africa Climate Action Summit. The Strategic Dialogue discussed developing Adaptation Country Investment Compacts and other mechanisms to determine the adaptation investment needs and financing opportunities for each country. The Summit will coalesce partners, including international financial institutions and the private sector, around accelerating adaptation financing and climate action leading into the United Nations Secretary-General’s Climate Action Summit and COP28.

The President, who is the Chair of the African Union’s Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change, was welcomed to the city of Rotterdam and the GCA Headquarters by GCA CEO Professor Verkooijen; the Mayor of Rotterdam, Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb; Jan Peter Balkenende, Prime Minister of the Netherlands (2002-2010) and GCA Executive Board Member and Feike Sijbesma, Board of Trustees, World Economic Forum, GCA Co-Chair.

His Excellency Ban Ki-moon, 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations and GCA Co-Chair; Josefa Leonel Correia Sacko, African Union Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment and Dr. Kevin Kariuki, Vice-President of the African Development Bank joined the Strategic Dialogue virtually to discuss the Africa Climate Action Summit. The discussion highlighted the importance of rich nations coming forward with commitments to honor the pledges made at COP26 in Glasgow to double adaptation financing by 2025 and how the Summit can help deliver the priorities of African governments to advance the “Green Agenda for Africa” including opportunities in green industrialisation.

Speaking during the dialogue, His Excellency William S. Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, said: “The world is now edging close and closer towards the brink of a climate disaster whose warning signs so far are the most catastrophic environmental and atmospheric phenomena humankind has ever encountered. The GCA exists to remind us of these fundamental truths, and to mobilise and empower effective responses in ways that are both reassuring and inspiring.”

Professor Patrick Verkooijen highlighted the importance of the Africa Climate Action Summit to mobilize climate finance for adaptation: “African countries are at ground zero of our climate emergency – they are already losing up to 15% of GDP growth due to climate change even though they are responsible for only 3% of global emissions. They must be given the chance to survive and thrive even as they suffer the impacts of a crisis they did not cause. Africa has the solutions but it needs climate finance and investment. I commend President Ruto for his leadership in hosting the Africa Climate Action Summit and look forward to the real and tangible commitments it will deliver.”

About the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP)
An Africa-owned and Africa-led program, the AAAP, is a joint initiative between the African Development Bank (AfDB) and GCA with the goal of mobilizing $25 billion for adaptation in Africa by 2025 through four pillars: food security, resilient infrastructure, youth entrepreneurship and job creation, and innovative climate adaptation finance. The African Union endorsed AAAP’s two financing mechanisms. The first mechanism is the AAAP Upstream Financing Facility hosted by GCA, which has already influenced over $5.2bn in investment for adaptation in Africa since its inception in 2021. The AfDB administers the second financing mechanism through the climate set aside under the ADF-16 replenishment, which builds on the AfDB’s commitment to finance $12.5 billion of adaptation programs – half of the AAAP investment target.

U17 AFCON: do-or-die game between Cameroon and Burkina Faso

The baby Lions have one last chance to determine if they advance to the next round of the U17 Africa Cup of Nations in Algeria or exit the competition.

The defending Champions take on Burkina Faso on Sunday, May 7, at 8:00 pm, a fixture which will determine which side qualifies for the quarter-finals of the ongoing youth tournament.

Serge Mimpo, Cameroon’s coach, assured fans that they will not be disappointed this time. “We have our backs against the wall, and we have to win. We are going to do our best against Burkina Faso and I believe we will not disappoint Cameroonians. I’m certain about that,” the coach was speaking during the pre-match press conference.

His counterpart from Burkina Faso said they are determined to defeat the Lions.

“After Mali’s defeat, we were all frustrated but we are highly motivated for the game against Cameroon. We are here to win all the three points. We are not looking at the fact that the Lions are the title holders, we are here to play for a win,” Coach Brahima Toure said.

Both Cameroon and Burkina Faso lost their first games against Mali, 0-2 and 0-1 respectively. The two sides have no point behind Mali who are already qualified for the quarter-finals with 6 points in three-team Group C.

Farmworker allegedly shot to death during hunting spree near Grootfontein

A 29-year-old farmworker died on Saturday morning after he was accidentally shot by his employer during an alleged hunting spree on Farm Choiganab no. 262 in the Grootfontein district.

Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Unit Commander for Community Affairs, Inspector Maureen Mbeha on Sunday told Nampa that the incident occurred at 00h30 and the deceased has been identified by his relatives as Jacob Kache.

It is alleged the suspect and his seven workers including Kache were on a hunting mission of some kudu animals which allegedly feed on his crops of maize and beans inside his farm, when Kache was hit once in the back and died.

“Kache and his colleague reportedly jumped from the back of the vehicle in order to slit the throat of a kudu, while the employer was still continuing to shoot at the same animal, and in the process accidentally shot him to death,’ Mbeha said.

The 38-year-old male suspect has been arrested on a culpable homicide charge and is expected to appear in the Grootfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Workers on the farm would normally slit the throat of a hunted animal in order for them to prevent it from blood clotting as the animal meat is meant for consumption, added Mbeha.

She said the police so far confiscated a 3006 hunting rifle which was fitted with a telescope, and suspected to have been used in the shooting, as well as a gun silencer and two packets of live ammunition from the suspect.

The seized items were on Saturday booked at the Grootfontein Police Station as court exhibits.

Police investigation into the matter continues.

MME to launch fleet management system

The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) has announced that it will launch a fleet management system (FMS) on Monday.

The FMS is a solution to the management, monitoring and control of the ministry’s fleet with real-time data to improve operational efficiency and enable management to make quick and informed decisions relating to fleet management.

Senior Public Relations Officer in the ministry, Andreas Simon in a media advisory on Sunday said that in 2017 the ministry identified the need to automate the fleet management business processes.

The system specifications were completed and the internal development of the FMS commenced in 2018, he said.

“The ministry views the FMS as a valuable asset to government and would contribute towards the promotion of e-services and innovation in terms of the information and communication technology,” Simon added, noting that the system will significantly contribute to the government initiative on cost-cutting measures.

The system, he further said aims to standardize government fleet management processes to improve service delivery and transparency.

NDF man commits suicide at Rundu

A member of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) at Rundu in the Kavango East Region, on Saturday committed suicide by shooting himself while on duty.

The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Acting Regional Commander in the region, Deputy Commissioner Eino Nambahu confirmed on Sunday that the incident happened at the Rundu Military Base at around 16h30 and the deceased was identified as 30-year-old Jonas Natanael Shilongo.

“It is alleged that the Shilongo booked out a rifle while on duty and this is the rifle he used to commit suicide,” Nambahu said.

It is further reported that the colleagues on duty with the deceased observed that he was not his usual self.

However, they could not tell that the deceased was suicidal and would use the firearm on himself as booking out a rifle was a procedure done when reporting for duty, Nambahu said.

The deceased lifeless body was found by his colleagues.

It is further reported that Shilongo left a suicide note, however, its content cannot be shared.

His next of kin have been informed and police investigation into the matter continues.
