Narok County has planted 283, 182 tree seedlings in the forest land since the green holiday on November 13, 2023.
The Narok County Ecosystem Conservator Daniel Mkung said the trees were mostly planted in Olposimoru, Chebitet, Enosupukia, Nkonkorr, Nkaretta, Osupuko and Olkirinye forests.
Mkung’ lauded different stakeholders who had volunteered to sponsor the tree growing exercise, calling on more institutions and individuals to continue planting tree seedlings in the forest land.
Among the institutions commended for sponsoring the tree planting exercise are Kenya Forest Service (KFS), Eden Restoration Project, Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), Kenya Forest Research Institution (KeFRI) and the Narok County Government.
The county targets to plant 4.3 million tree seedlings by the end of the ongoing rains hence the need for every person to take the individual responsibility of planting trees very seriously.
Mkung said this when he led the public to plant over 5000 tree seedlings at KDF base in Lamek a
rea, Narok West Sub County. The tree seedlings were donated by KFS.
At the same time, Narok North Member of Parliament Agnes Pareiyo called on the residents to protect the forest land to conserve the environment.
Pareiyo while speaking at a Manyatta celebrations in Rotian area commended the government for evicting people living in the Maasai Mau Forest land.
‘I urge my people not to build houses, farm or graze in the forest land without permission from the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) because we are in the process of boosting our forest cover,’ she said.
She urged the residents to take advantage of the ongoing rains to plant trees in their individual farms to increase the forest cover.
In August this year, the government began the process of evicting people from the Maasai Mau Forest after it emerged that about 26, 000 hectares of the forest land had been encroached.
