MOMBASA: As the festive season approaches, Mombasa County Commissioner Mohamed Nur has called on residents to actively collaborate with security agencies to curb escalating insecurity issues. Commissioner Nur made these remarks during the Jamhuri Day celebrations at the Mwahima Stadium in Likoni Sub-County, urging community involvement to address criminal activities, particularly in Kisauni and Likoni Sub-Counties.According to Kenya News Agency, the County Commissioner acknowledged the prevalence of criminal incidents in these areas but assured the public of the police's commitment to apprehending those responsible. Nur highlighted the success of the ongoing East African Community games in Mombasa, attributing the lack of security incidents to effective cooperation between residents and local authorities.Residents were encouraged to report crimes and assist in legal processes to ensure convictions, especially amid a rise in phone-snatching incidents. Nur cautioned against purchasing second-hand phones due to potential links to violent thefts, emphasizing efforts to create a peaceful city environment. Plans include job creation for youth and rehabilitation for those affected by drug abuse.The county's residents were also urged to register with the Social Health Authority to benefit from the Taifa Care healthcare program. Commissioner Nur advised youths to use the internet responsibly during the holiday season, promoting positive online engagement.Governor Abdulswamad Nassir announced the installation of 280 Closed Circuit Televisions (CCTVs) across the county to boost surveillance. These cameras, equipped with facial recognition technology, aim to deter criminal activities. Governor Nassir also encouraged enrollment in the Taifa Care program, promising government financial support for vulnerable families.In education, Governor Nassir warned Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centers against imposing fees, as learning will be free starting January. He assured financial support for schools to cove r recurrent expenses. Additionally, plans are underway to improve drainage systems and construct access roads in Likoni, with 13 already completed and five more planned.
