All 2022 law graduates at this prestigious Canadian university are Nigerians – Dean

CALGARY (Alberta, Canada)— An entire class of Master of Laws students composed of all Nigerians graduated last Saturday from the University of Calgary Law School, Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Lan Holloway, dean of the University of Calgary Law School, made this known on Twitter. “This is cool. We have 9 students graduating with their LLMs today (Saturday). All are Nigerian! ?@ProfXtian @NigeriaGov,” he celebrated the feat, tagging the Nigerian Government.

The names of the graduating students are Oluchi Jennifer, Ola Eke-Okoro, Maryam Lawal, Toritsemofe Mene and Emmanuelle Odum. The rest are Ifedayo Issac, Ifeoluwa Tolulope, Olatian Adeniyi and Olashegun Olayinka. The L.L.M, which is a postgraduate degree, is usually earned in a one-year program. It is for law students and professionals who want expertise in a specialized law field.

The University of Calgary is a comprehensive research university with four campuses across the Calgary, Alberta region and a fifth location in Doha, Qatar. UCalgary enrolls around 35,000 students in undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs

The University of Calgary Faculty of Law, at the University of Calgary, opened in 1976 with a first-year class of sixty students and nine faculty members. With 130 first-year spots and approximately 1200 applicants per year, this law school has an acceptance rate of less than 10%.

In Re$earch Infosource Inc.’s recent Top 50 Research Universities list released in January this year, the University of Calgary is ranked fifth among Canada’s top research universities. It is the youngest university to have reached the top five.

Canada has been one of the top study destinations for Nigerians for some years now. As of December 31, 2021, the number of Nigerian students studying in Canada has hit a record 13,745, per data from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada cited by Businessday NG. The number of study permits for Nigeria also went up from 10,550 in 2020 to 13,745, making it the ninth most popular source country for international students.
