The Agricultural Sector Development Support Programme (ASDSP) 11 in vihiga has planted 200 Hass avocado seedlings at the Friends College Kaimosi as part of the national tree-planting campaign.The County project coordinator Mary Muema, who presided over the exercise, said they were responding to the presidential directive of marching towards planting 15 billion trees in the next 10 years.The ASDSP 11 coordinator stated that they intend the increase the number of trees at the institution in the future.She said they had settled for the fruit tree species because it will not only assist in the mitigation against negative climate change effects but also provide food for the college community.The college Deputy Principal Lydia Sonkole said they have been given a target of raising one million trees over the 10-year period and expressed their determination to ensure it comes to fruition.Sonkole disclosed that the institution has a population of over 6,000 students that can provide the labour and appealed t o the county department of agriculture to assist with the seedlings.Vihiga county government has set a target of planting 23 million trees in the next ten years, which translates to doing about 2.3 million per year.Source: Kenya News Agency
