Buffalo Attack Leaves Herder Critically Injured in Ijara Sub-County

Masalani: A rogue buffalo attack has left a young herder critically injured in the Madah Adon area of Masalani Location, Ijara Sub-County, Garissa County.

According to Kenya News Agency, residents who spoke about the incident identified the herder as Shukri Mohamed. He was attacked while herding cattle on Thursday when the buffalo charged at him, inflicting severe injuries. Fellow herders and villagers rushed to his aid and took him to Masalani Sub-County Referral Hospital for emergency treatment.

Efforts to reach Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Warden for Ijara Sub-County, Adan Alio, were unsuccessful as he was reportedly out on official duty. Masalani Police Station OCS, Joseph Mulanda, confirmed the incident, stating that investigations had begun to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and the condition of the injured herder. He added that detailed information would be shared with the press once available.

Residents said the buffalo may have wandered close to human settlements in search of
water during the ongoing dry season, leading to the confrontation. Shukri has since been transferred to Masalani Level Four Hospital, where he is receiving treatment. The incident has raised concern among pastoralist communities over the rising cases of human-wildlife conflict in the region.

Local authorities have urged residents to exercise caution, particularly in areas known to host wild animals, and to report sightings promptly to the Kenya Wildlife Service for swift intervention.
