The Coalition of Cameroon Federalist Groups and Activists (CCFGA) on October 1, 2024, issued a statement marking the 63rd anniversary of what they describe as Federation Day in Cameroon. The organization called for a return to federalism and criticized the suppression of the federal system of government in 1972.In the statement, CCFGA Chairperson Michael Takie emphasized the importance of recognizing October 1st as the true national day of Cameroon, as it commemorates the day the people of former Southern Cameroons joined with former French Cameroon to form the nation. He condemned the efforts of some forces to distort and hide this history.Takie highlighted two significant errors that have led to the neglect of October 1st as the true National Day. The first error was the unconstitutional suppression of the federal system of government in favor of a centralized unitary state in 1972. The second error was the transformation of the demand for federalism into a demand for a separate independent state of fo rmer Southern Cameroons. The CCFGA urged Cameroonians to use political means to correct the injustice of May 20th, 1972, and to fight for federalism by all means, including the transparency of all elections and the freedom of political parties to compete. The organization also called on those who have embraced the dream of separation to reconsider and embrace Cameroon as their country.About CCFGAThe Coalition of Cameroon Federalist Groups and Activists (CCFGA) is a coalition of organizations and individuals committed to promoting federalism in Cameroon. The coalition advocates for a return to the federal system of government that existed before 1972.Source: Cameroon News Agency
