Nairobi: Tharaka Nithi County Commissioner, David Gitonga, has urged students to embrace discipline and hard work, emphasizing that success in sports and life in general depended on commitment. Presiding over the opening of the Eastern Region Secondary School Ball Games tournament being hosted by Chuka Boys’ High School, the commissioner cautioned the high school students against drug use, warning that substance abuse would hinder their potential to excel.
According to Kenya News Agency, the Tharaka Nithi County Director of Education, Ms. Bridget Wambua, was present during the event and underscored the role of sports in shaping well-rounded students. Wambua encouraged schools to balance academics and extracurricular activities, noting that sports provide valuable life skills such as teamwork, resilience, and leadership.
The competition features various disciplines, including football, athletics, volleyball, and basketball, with students from different counties battling for the regional championship title. Excitement filled the air as the first matches commenced, with fans, coaches, and teachers cheering on their teams.
Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) officials present at the event praised the organizers of the games, noting that such competitions play a crucial role in identifying future sports stars.
