City Beautification

Nakuru City in collaboration with the Environment Department have mapped out spaces for installing additional planters in the core Central Business District (CBD).

This initiative aims to enhance the urban environment and create a more aesthetically pleasing city center.

Key locations within the CBD have been identified for the planters, which will beautify the area and contribute to environmental sustainability by adding greenery and improving air quality.

During the exercise today the City Manager Mr. Gitau Thabanja emphasized the importance of green spaces in urban settings, stating that the goal was to transform Nakuru into a greener, eco-friendlier and sustainable city for residents and visitors alike.

He noted that flowers enhance the visual appeal of the city, making it more attractive to residents, tourists, and investors, adding that beautiful landscapes could boost civic pride and contribute to a positive image of the city.

The City Manager emphasized that flowers contributed to the urban ecosy
stem by improving air quality, reducing pollution, and supporting biodiversity besides attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies, which are essential for the health of the environment.

Apart from that he said green spaces and colorful flowers could have a positive impact on mental health because they provide a serene environment that can reduce stress, promote relaxation, and improve overall well-being for city dwellers.

Additionally, he said a well-maintained and visually appealing city attracts tourists, leading to increased revenue for local businesses thereby stimulating the local economy and creating job opportunities in the tourism and horticulture sectors.

Besides, he noted that flower planting initiatives could foster a sense of community and encourage civic engagement since residents could participate in gardening and maintenance activities, promoting social and community cohesion.

Furthermore, he said integrating flowers and green space into urban planning augments the overall design and
functionality of the city, provides recreational areas, improved walkability, plus it discourages littering because people feel embarrassed to drop dirty when a place looks neat and well maintained.

Overall, planting flowers in cities has multifaceted benefits that contribute to its environmental health, economic vitality, and well-being of its residents.

A number of international cities such as London, New York and Amsterdam that attract numerous tourists normally use well-kept flower gardens in their adverts that appeal to the eye and make such places to unveil and give a glimpse of the Garden of Eden.
