MOMBASA: Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, Hassan Ali Joho has officially launched the Kidongo fishing landing site in an effort to offer seamless space within the fishing sector. Speaking at Majaoni area, Mombasa County, the Cabinet Secretary highlighted that the Sh 175 million project will benefit fishermen in various ways including a cold storage room that will enable adequate preservation and enough equipment to facilitate fish processing.According to Kenya News Agency, Joho emphasized that the fishermen have suffered for a long time, and this event marks the beginning of a significant shift within the fishing sector, particularly in Mombasa County. He expressed optimism that the new facilities would enhance the livelihoods of local fishermen by improving fish preservation and processing capabilities.On her part, Principal Secretary for Mining and Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, Betsy Njagi, assured maximum inclusion of women in projects within the Blue Economy Sector . She stated that the project, which will lead to the construction of a market to sell the fish, will see women actively participating in the market as they sell fish.The launch of the Kidongo fish landing site is seen as a crucial step in bolstering the local economy and supporting sustainable practices within the fishing community. The government's commitment to integrating women into these initiatives is also viewed as a positive move towards gender equality and empowerment in the sector.
