Garissa: Garissa county government has established a fully pledged department headed by a Chief Officer for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) which will deal with their issues in a well-structured manner. Speaking during the commemoration for the International Day for Persons with Disabilities at Garissa Primary School ground, Garissa Governor Nathif Jama expressed his commitment to addressing the issues of PWDs and involving them in decision-making on matters touching on their welfare.According to Kenya News Agency, Jama stated that his government has already employed 115 persons with disabilities in various departments, and the number is set to increase during future county employment. Jama emphasized that many of these employees hold senior positions, and he expressed hope for leaving a legacy as a champion for PWDs, in collaboration with development partners.Garissa County Commissioner Mohamed Mwabudzo also addressed the event, discouraging discrimination against PWDs and noting that everyone has a rol e to play in society despite their physical appearances. Mwabudzo highlighted the importance of providing equal opportunities for learning skills and ensuring rights for PWDs are observed, including involving them in government programs.Mwabudzo further acknowledged the strides made in embracing PWDs, noting that both county and national governments have been considering them for employment opportunities and providing special funds to help them sustain themselves. He encouraged PWDs to avoid self-pity and seize available opportunities, affirming their ability to achieve success.
