The family of a gendarme shot and killed last week in Cameroon is demanding justice and a full explanation from authorities.Gislain Thierry Gansop, 33, died on July 13, 2024, from a gunshot wound allegedly fired by his brigade commander in the Massok Gendarmerie Brigade, Sanaga Maritime Division, Littoral region, according to his brother Bertrand Mboudjeu.Mboudjeu told Cameroon News Agency that the family only learned of the incident through social media and has been unable to view the body or receive a clear explanation from officials. They were initially directed to the Edea 1 Gendarmerie Company, where they were told the commander was unavailable.'He answered the phone when we reached him directly,' Mboudjeu said. 'He confirmed the news and said the body was taken to the morgue of the military hospital in Douala. He said we would only be informed of the details after the investigation is complete.'A security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a bystander witnessed the shooting and has been questioned by investigators. The source suggested the commander's service weapon, an automatic pistol, may have been discharged accidentally.'All we expect is justice and information to know the true circumstances surrounding our brother's death,' Mboudjeu said. Some family members suspect foul play and believe the shooting may have been intentional. The commander has been arrested and is currently detained at the Edea 1 Gendarmerie Company, where the investigation is ongoing.Gansop, a nine-year veteran of the gendarmerie, was married with a two-year-old son and expecting another child.Source: Cameroon News Agency
