African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) National Governance Council member, Uhuru Dempers has said good governance is not only the business of government, but should be the collaborative responsibility of all community institutions.
During the opening of the APRM National Governance Report (AGR) consultation workshop in the Erongo Region on Tuesday, Dempers noted that every citizen has the obligation and mandate to take action by correcting misgovernance in any institution.
The NGR is the second report produced by the APRM in 2021 and focuses on African governance 2063 scenarios.
“Whether it is in our community institutions, churches, youth groups, local government, regional governments, national governments or any agencies within government where we see misgovernance or elements of violation of the principles of good governance, we as citizens have the mandate to take action to correct principles of good governance,” he said.
The APRM is a platform that was created by the heads of states of Africa in 2003, under the African Union to take charge of governance and development challenges that is confronting the continent.
The platform is aimed at coming up with mechanisms and tools that Africa can use to assess itself with a clear review for leaders and people of Africa, and then sharing good lessons about their governance and development.
“They can also use it to correct each other in terms of their weaknesses and share lessons, in terms of how each one of them has to resolve those challenges,” Dempers expressed.
Erongo Governor Neville Andre Itope highlighted that the APRM is an essential continental initiative that promotes good governance, transparency and accountability among African nations.
He added that the workshop therefore holds significant importance as Namibia embarks on the journey of developing a comprehensive framework for the National Governance Report.
“The workshop is a testament to our commitment to collective action and the belief that the development of a nation is closely intertwined with good governance practices.
By working together, sharing our experiences and challenges, and collaborating on the framework for the National Governance Report, we are taking significant strides towards ensuring sustainable development and prosperity for our nations.
