Elgeyo marakwet: The government is intensifying its efforts to relocate families residing in high-risk zones in Elgeyo Marakwet following the tragic mudslides in Chesongoch and Murkutwo that resulted in 41 fatalities. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen emphasized the state’s dedication to ensuring the safe resettlement of these families, alongside providing psychosocial support and facilitating long-term reconstruction for the affected communities.
According to Kenya News Agency, Murkomen, addressing mourners at a requiem mass held at St. Maurus Primary School grounds in Chesongoch, stressed the urgency of moving residents from high-risk areas to safer regions. “We will ensure victims are resettled on geologically stable land and supported fully as they rebuild their lives,” he stated. The Cabinet Secretary, along with families, leaders, and residents, paid their respects to 31 victims, while also assuring the community of the government’s steadfast commitment to providing necessary aid and ensuring accountability.
Murkomen instructed local administrators and security teams to meticulously manage the distribution of aid, making it clear that any misuse of resources intended for the victims would not be tolerated. “I have directed the County Commissioner to ensure that all the assistance from the government and well-wishers is used prudently,” he affirmed, emphasizing the importance of verifying beneficiaries to prevent corruption.
He conveyed condolences from President Dr. William Samoei Ruto and other national leaders, underscoring the President’s directive to expedite support for the affected families. Additionally, Murkomen reassured those who lost their homes that rebuilding materials were readily available and that support efforts would commence immediately.
The government is also considering the establishment of a centralized affordable housing site for the survivors. Murkomen noted, “It would have been better to pick one area for building affordable housing, but we will work in consultation with the local community to ensure that is possible.”
Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich, who also attended the mass, expressed solidarity with the grieving families. “We have gathered here to honour 31 of our people who perished in the devastating mudslide that struck on the night of Friday, 31st October,” he said, offering condolences to the affected families.
As the community continues to mourn, leaders remain committed to enhancing safety measures, rebuilding homes, and strengthening disaster preparedness to avert such tragedies in the future.
