Illicit Liquor Seized In Machakos

A multi-agency team has seized at least 221 boxes of second-generation brands of liquor in Mwala during the ongoing crackdown on illicit brews.

Machakos County Commissioner Josephine Ouko while speaking to the media at the County Commander’s office said the liquor was impounded after two vehicles were intercepted while transporting the alcohol to Machakos town.

Ouko said the officers trailed the vehicles from Kangundo before intercepting them in Mwala on their way to Machakos town. Ouko revealed that a Toyota Probox was carrying 100 boxes of illicit brew, while the second vehicle carried 121 boxes each containing 24 bottles.

She claimed that some boxes were from legitimate companies and were used to conceal illicit liquor. The administrator assured residents that security teams in the county are on high alert and all culprits involved in the illegal business will be apprehended.

Ouko added that bars in Machakos will remain closed until the renewal of licenses to curb the spread of harmful substances and
illicit brews to the community. She said that they were collaborating with the county government to do a re-inspection of bars and issue new licenses.

‘Machakos County has to be clean and people will be doing legitimate businesses so as to protect our people,’ added Ouko. The county commissioner hailed the public for their collaboration in making Machakos give valuable tips to security officers resulting in over 2000 arrests across the county.

The county commissioner warned against continuing the illicit 2nd generation liquor industry due to threats made by these manufacturers. The drivers of the vehicle have been arrested and will be charged in court while police are still pursuing the manufacturers of the illicit liquor.
