Nairobi: Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has assured Nyamira residents: that the County’s security team is doing its best to ensure they are secure.
According to Kenya News Agency, Murkomen gave this assurance while presiding over an engagement forum with the entire county security team, its leadership fraternity, and residents on an initiative dubbed Jukwaa la Usalama in Nyamira County headquarters.
Murkomen acknowledged Nyamira’s significant role in boosting their economy through agriculture and engaging in other trade ventures to sustain their livelihoods. The CS, however, highlighted the security challenges facing the county, pointing out cattle theft in Borabu Constituency, particularly along the border with Bomet, as well as the challenge of alcohol and drug abuse, including the packaging and selling of second-generation liquor, which is harmful to consumers’ health.
He assured the community that some of the cattle thieves had already been profiled, including buyers, butchers, and thief financiers. “We have already profiled all the suspects and they will be apprehended soon and be brought to book,” the CS added.
Murkomen advised that active public barazas at the border should be initiated to encourage citizen participation and to create synergy among security stakeholders and affected communities, ensuring they work together effectively.
The CS also addressed critical issues like sexual and gender-based violence (GBV) and female genital mutilation (FGM), warning that they ceased to be cultural practices because they dehumanize victims and are therefore criminal offenses which must be dealt with before courts of law.
CS Murkomen announced plans to procure 3,000 vehicles for police stations and initiate recruitment to fill staffing gaps. He also promised to establish a registration office in Manga Sub County within two months to serve the local community. “The government is committed to fully support community-led initiatives to foster secure environments to attract investors and ease business operations without fear of loss of life or property,” he stated.
