Irrigation Projects To Boost Food Security

The Turkana County Government has inspected irrigation projects to ascertain their status before handing them over to the community to improve their livelihood.

The team, led by County Executive for Agriculture, Livestock Development, and Fisheries Dr. Anthony Apalia and Chief Officer for Agriculture and Land Reclamation Janerose Tioko, evaluated the progress of Morulem integrated modern drip, Namalteny, and Elelea irrigation schemes in Katilia and Lokori/Kochodin Wards.

The CECM said that after completion, the projects would steer the county towards food security, as he urged farmers in the area to improve the management of the schemes.

The projects aim to facilitate food production through the production of assorted high-value crops such as horticulture and legumes.

Furthermore, it will utilise the dry seasonal river and prevent the conveyance loss of water through slippage for maximum use by farmers, especially during the rainy season.

Chief Officer Tioko also urged all the stakeholders in the project
s to collaborate to ensure that the projects are successful.
