Veteran Media Personality Fred Obachi Machoka has urged journalists in the radio industry to embrace women empowerment programs in their work as part of celebrating the progress of women and achieving gender equality in society.Speaking during the World Radio Day celebration in Kisii town, Mr. Machoka said the interests of the girl child could be well represented by men and women in the radio space as long as both parties are interested in the welfare of the girl child.'The multiplication of the radio stations should give the girl child and women enough space to articulate their issues, especially in the rural areas, by interviewing them at their place of work so that they can contribute to the development agenda,' said Machoka.The veteran journalist cautioned the media against using the female gender solely to promote equality in society adding that there is a need for men and women to work together and harmoniously to achieve gender equality.On her part, Consolata Mocha decried the smaller number of female journalists in the radio industry despite the high number of young women pursuing Journalism and Media courses in institutions of higher learning.Mocha, the first female radio journalist in Kisii, encouraged female graduates in the media industry to come out and compete fairly with their male counterparts for positions in the various media houses.The Association of Professional Broadcasters Vice-Chairperson Thomas Gesora noted that many women have been empowered and should showcase their work in the industry as well as utilize digital spaces for a bigger audience reach.Source: Kenya News Agency
