Over 10,000 pupils in various schools in Butere Sub County will benefit from free sanitary towels donated by the Government through the office of the area Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda.Muhanda said in partnership with the National Government they have received about one million sanitary pads to cater for the school-going children in the County.'We will give 10447 pads to the pupils in 81 schools within the sub-county and ensure they don't miss school during their menstrual period,' said Muhanda.She said statistics show children from poor backgrounds who cannot afford the towels spend 20 percent of their time at home without attending school.The Women Rep said they had already rolled out the programme in Lugari, Shinyalu and Ikolomani Sub counties while Mumias East, Mumias West, Matungu and Khwisero will have the exercise launched soon.She said that the pupils would have more time in school and concentrate on their studies therefore improving academic performance.Muhanda was speaking at Buter e Primary School compound when she gave out the towels to the girls.She was accompanied by the area Deputy County Commissioner Hassan Mohammed and other county officials.The legislator also promised to build toilets and offer Water tanks to the school.The sanitary towels that are expected to end periods shame will be distributed to all girls in public primary and junior secondary school.Source: Kenya News Agency
