Nairobi: The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an advisory warning of heavy rainfall expected over parts of Central Kenya, Nairobi, the Central Rift Valley, and the Southeastern lowlands from Thursday, 14th November to Friday, 15th November. The advisory comes as a cautionary measure to prepare residents for potential weather-related disruptions.According to Kenya News Agency, the advisory specifically highlights Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Isiolo, Nakuru, Kericho, Bomet, and Narok, as well as parts of Kajiado, Nairobi, Machakos, Kitui, and Makueni as areas of concern. These regions are likely to experience heavy rainfall exceeding 20mm in 24 hours, with intensities expected to increase to over 30mm on Friday, signaling a risk of potential flash floods in low-lying areas.The department has projected that the intensity of the rains will reduce from 16th November over most parts of the country. Residents in the affected areas are advised to ex ercise caution by avoiding walking or driving through moving water and to stay away from open fields during thunderstorms. It is crucial for people in landslide-prone regions, particularly on the slopes of Aberdare Ranges, Mt. Kenya, and other hilly areas, to remain vigilant and prepared for possible emergencies.Furthermore, the advisory urges residents to be mindful of potential flash floods. Individuals living downstream of rivers and along seasonal rivers should remain cautious, as water levels may rise unexpectedly even if it is not raining within their immediate vicinity.
