Kenyan Government Initiates Dyke Construction on River Nyando to Mitigate Flooding

Kenya: The government is undertaking a project to construct dykes along River Nyando, aimed at controlling the flooding triggered by the El Nino rains. This initiative is intended to provide relief to the families residing downstream of the river, who are frequently affected by floodwaters.

According to Kenya News Agency, Communications, and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary (CS) Eliud Owallo, the construction of the dykes is a short-term measure to protect communities against flood impacts. This follows the successful desilting of River Nyando by the National Youth Service (NYS) prior to the onset of the current rainy season.

In addition to the dykes, Owallo mentioned a long-term strategy involving the construction of the Koru-Soin multi-purpose dam, located on the border of Kisumu and Kericho counties. The dam is expected to regulate water flow downstream, generate electricity, supply potable water, and support irrigation, thus enhancing food security in the region.

Speaking at a relief food distribution event at Nyamasawo Primary School in Ahero, Owallo emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by flood-affected households. He assured that these projects would be expedited to resolve the flooding issues permanently.

Owallo also highlighted the government’s dedication to the development of the Nyanza region, encouraging local residents to support President Dr. William Ruto in fulfilling his election promises. “The president has appointed a critical mass from this region to senior positions in government, demonstrating his readiness and willingness to collaborate with us,” he stated.

He further elaborated on the President’s commitment to implementing the Nyanza Region Economic Development Blueprint, focusing on infrastructure, agriculture, food security, and water. Owallo referenced several ongoing initiatives, including the Sh. 3 billion Kabonyo Kanyagwal fish project in Kisumu County, as evidence of the President’s dedication to the region’s advancement.

Owallo urged local leaders to support the President’s efforts in launching more development projects, aiming to improve community livelihoods. “We don’t want to be left behind. We want to be part of the next government in 2027,” he concluded.
