Ting'ang'a: The Kiambu county departmental heads have launched an ambitious tree planting exercise that will see forest cover increased in the region.According to Kenya News Agency, the exercise conducted at Ting'ang'a model primary school yesterday saw 400 tree seedlings planted in the area, 100 of which were planted within the school compound. Another 300 seedlings were distributed to farmers to go and plant within their own farms.Ting'ang'a Deputy County Commissioner Titus Macharia, representing the County Commissioner, said that this was a launch of a campaign that will run throughout the county to promote tree growing during these short rains. "We are in the process of increasing the national tree cover by continuing the mission laid out by President William Ruto, to reach the countrywide target of 15 billion trees by 2030," he said.Peter Ng'ang'a, the Kiambu County Conservator and forester, stated that the goal is to plant 165 million tree seedlings in the next 10 years. "We are working with the c ounty government and private institutions to continue encouraging people to plant trees," he said. "We have been in communication with the weather department to ascertain the best time to plant trees and for this period, the time is now!" he added.
