Lamu East Legislator Backs Affordable Housing Initiative

Lamu East MP Ruweida Obo has thrown her weight behind the National Government’s move to implement the Affordable Housing initiative across all Counties in the Country.

Speaking to KNA in Lamu Island, the legislator revealed that she had voted yes in last month’s Parliamentary vote towards the implementation of the Affordable Housing Bill which had been tabled in Parliament for a vote following its amendment to comply with a court directive to ensure its suitability according to the Constitution.

She further stated that Lamu East especially stands to gain from the project not only from the inflow of jobs but also from the way it will aid in modernizing Pate Island.

‘So far Lamu East tends to be in the periphery of the Lamu County Spatial Plan, which provides a detailed urbanization model for Towns in Lamu West, however, Lamu East has been ignored in that plan,’ she said, adding that the Affordable Housing Programme in the Constituency will aid spur growth of Pate and Kizingitini Towns which are being target
ed for the initiative.

Captain Obo further revealed that so far 220 units are being targeted for the affordable housing initiative in Lamu East further reiterating that they will aid in spurring growth of Faza and Kizingitini Towns.

‘The project will also aid in ensuring that key infrastructure such as piped water and tarmacked roads become a feature for the Lamu East Township areas,’ she said, adding that they will further mark the National Government’s move to connect Pate Island to the national grid.

‘The Affordable Housing Project will also ensure that more investors and businesses grow with the coming of the urban housing project,’ Ruweida added.

The two-term MP also stated that a new Township is likely to emerge with the Affordable Housing Project that will further create opportunities for local youths in Pate Island.

The legislator has thrown her weight behind backing the Affordable Housing Project and further called on the National Government to speed up efforts of upgrading the 38-kilometre Mtan
gawanda Road up to bitumen status.
