Busia Governor Paul Otuoma has challenged elected leaders to refrain from politicking and instead serve the residents.
Speaking during a prayer breakfast forum at Busia Agricultural Training Centre on Thursday, Otuoma stated that the time for politicking is long gone.
‘Currently we are not campaigning, we are in offices,’ he said adding that leaders should focus on the functions of the offices they have been mandated to undertake.
He added that there was a need to strengthen democracy by amending the Constitution to ensure that the process of impeaching governors becomes more difficult.
‘What we want as governors is the interpretation of the law because we are saying, you cannot be voted by people directly and then removing a governor is easier than removing an MCA or MP,’ he said adding that this is undermining governors.
The Governor further said that there should be a law indicating when to politick and when to work adding that elected leaders should come up with alternative solutions to problems fac
ing locals instead of campaigning against their colleagues.
Otuoma challenged leaders to come up with structures that could make people spend money and time in the County so that there could be circulation of money and wealth creation in the devolved units.
The chairman of the Western Council of Elders Philip Masinde said that the country cannot develop without peace and unity.
Masinde further stated that the country has enough money that could serve the basic needs of all Kenyans ‘but only if Chapter Six of the Constitution is implemented’.
Budalangi MP Raphael Wanjala urged voters to be careful and elect leaders who can fulfill their campaign promises.
The forum was attended by religious leaders from different denominations, a section of residents, and officers from both the county and national governments.
