Kajiado: The Law Society of Kenya (LSK), in collaboration with the Kajiado Paralegal Center, organized a one-day legal aid clinic focusing on Gender-Based Violence and Access to Justice. Advocates, led by LSK President Faith Odhiambo, offered legal assistance to local community members after hearing their legal concerns.
According to Kenya News Agency, Odhiambo emphasized that the clinic was prompted by numerous cases of femicide and Gender-Based Violence reported in the region. The LSK Gender Committee initiated the event to address complaints and to strategize on how the organization could help secure justice for affected individuals.
A significant issue addressed during the clinic was the case of a serial rapist known as ‘Lorgali,’ who has been terrorizing women, the elderly, and children in Magadi, Kajiado West. Odhiambo vowed to liaise with the Director of Public Prosecutions to advance the investigations, highlighting the necessity to prevent such crimes and protect community members from suffering in silence.
The Ilkiek Onyokie community also seized the opportunity to present a petition concerning the longstanding Kibiko land dispute. Odhiambo assured them that the LSK would review the petition and devise intervention strategies to support their pursuit of justice.
Odhiambo expressed gratitude to the advocates providing pro bono services and urged more members to participate in legal aid initiatives, especially with the upcoming Legal Awareness Week from October 27th to 31st.
Irene Otto, head of LSK’s Gender Committee, mentioned that the public was educated on GBV, its various forms, and the steps to take if victimized. She assured that urgent matters identified during the clinic would be addressed promptly.
Halima Sharif, Chairperson of Hope Abled Differently Organization, highlighted the rising cases of GBV and femicide in Kajiado. She called on the government and stakeholders to implement measures ensuring the safety of women in the community.
