Maragua MP Leads Constituents in Mourning Raila Odinga’s Death

Kenol: The news of the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Wednesday morning has plunged the country into mourning, with leaders and citizens alike expressing deep sorrow at the loss of one of Kenya’s most influential political figures.

According to Kenya News Agency, in Kenol town residents gathered in small groups, hushed tones probably to reflect on the life and legacy of the man fondly referred to as Baba – a name synonymous with reform, resistance, and the relentless pursuit of justice.

Maragua Member of Parliament, Mary Wamaua, led residents in paying tribute to the late statesman, describing him as a visionary leader whose resilience and sacrifices helped shape Kenya’s democracy and unity. Speaking at Kirimiri Primary School in Makuyu during an event to mark Global Handwashing Day, Wamaua said the nation had lost a man who stood for justice, peace, and national cohesion.

‘We have received the news of the passing on of Raila Odinga with sorrow and disbelief as we prepared to mark this day here,’ she said. ‘We are truly saddened as we have known Raila as someone who has shaped the politics of this country and we pray that his family and all Kenyans find solace during this difficult moment.’

The legislator eulogized the late Odinga as a selfless patriot who always put the interests of the nation above personal ambition. She added that his role in championing multiparty democracy and devolution would remain a cornerstone of Kenya’s governance history. ‘Raila has brought us all up politically. He worked with the late President Mwai Kibaki, with former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and most recently with President William Ruto in promoting a broad-based government. If it were our will, we would have wanted him to stay longer and continue guiding the nation.’

Residents of Maragua who joined the MP in the event also expressed their grief, describing Odinga as a symbol of hope, courage, and patriotism. Simon Kingori Mwaura, a youth leader from the constituency, said the news of Odinga’s death had deeply affected the younger generation, who viewed him as an enduring example of perseverance and resilient leadership. ‘As the youth, we feel bereaved because for all the years we have heard about Raila and he has shaped the politics of this country,’ he said. ‘When you hear about devolution, you know Raila is there. When you hear democracy, Raila is an embodiment of it. We feel the loss deeply because the politics in this country have taken an about-turn because he is an example of resilience, and we pray that his family finds strength.’
