Murang'a: The Murang'a County Assembly moved forward with the vetting process for nominees to the County Public Service Board despite the withdrawal of Dr. Nancy Macharia, who was initially nominated as the board's chairperson. Dr. Macharia declined the position, citing her commitments with a World Bank consultancy, which she deemed of higher importance.
According to Kenya News Agency, in a letter to Governor Irungu Kang'ata, Dr. Macharia expressed her gratitude for the nomination but voiced concerns over her ability to fulfill the role due to the full-time nature of the position. Her decision came shortly before the scheduled vetting exercise, prompting the assembly to proceed with evaluating the remaining nominees for key positions on the board.
The nominees under consideration included Dr. Louis Mwende Musikali, Johnson Kang'ethe Kinyua, and Dr. Brian Lishenga Makamu as board members, with Oscar Kimani Gathura nominated as the board's secretary. A joint committee on Governance, Labour and Social Welfare, alongside Justice and Legal Affairs, was tasked with the vetting process.
Oscar Kimani Gathura, the nominee for board secretary, emphasized his commitment to ensuring efficient coordination and transparency within board activities. He highlighted the importance of accurate documentation and effective communication between the board and other county departments.
The prospective board members, Dr. Musikali, Kinyua, and Dr. Makamu, each pledged to prioritize merit, integrity, and transparency in the county's human resource processes. Dr. Musikali advocated for fairness and inclusivity in recruitment, while Kinyua focused on fostering accountability and rewarding productivity.
Kariara MCA Gichobe Mbatia, who chaired the vetting committee, affirmed that the exercise adhered to constitutional guidelines. He noted the committee's thorough evaluation of nominees based on academic qualifications, professional experience, and their understanding of public service values.
Despite the professional conduct of the vetting process, Mbatia expressed concern over low public engagement, with only three sworn affidavits received, all related to Dr. Macharia, who withdrew. He urged greater public participation in future vetting processes to enhance transparency and accountability.
The committee is slated to finalize and present its report on July 1, during the Assembly's full sitting. Upon approval, the new members will join existing board members Stephen Macharia, Rebecca Kamande, and Agnes Kiwara.
