Over 60 Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs) from 20 counties today met in Kiambu to participate in a two-day Pre-Assembly organised by the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK).The event, a precursor to the NCCK's 65th General Assembly, was themed 'Redefining Disability: Recognising and Appreciating Disabilities.' It emphasised on the need for inclusion, empowerment, and integration of PWDs in Kenyan society.Speaking during the opening of the Assembly in Limuru, NCCK Chairperson Pastor Geoffrey Wanyoike said that approximately one million Kenyans live with disabilities and there is an urgent need for their inclusivity in all sectors.'We need all societal stakeholders to play their roles in promoting inclusion. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that persons with disabilities are not just included, but celebrated, in every aspect of our society,' Wanyoike said.During the meeting, Churches were encouraged to be welcoming to PWDs: 'It is important for all churches and congregations to be friendly to persons with disabilities in their attitudes and ministry, allowing them to participate and contribute in the ministry and leadership of our churches,' Pastor Wanyoike elaborated.Wanyoike also called on the government to ensure the implementation of Article 54 (2) of the Constitution of Kenya, which mandates that at least 5 percent of members in elective and appointive bodies be persons with disabilities.Specific appeals included revising university entry requirements for special education graduates, ensuring cash transfers to registered PWDs, and expediting the review of the Persons with Disabilities Bill 2024.County governments were also urged to create opportunities for PWDs to better their livelihoods and to also exempt their businesses from levies.The NCCK Chair also called for the establishment of PWD-friendly sports facilities and the integration of PWD policies into county laws. 'County governments must create opportunities for persons with disabilities to build dignified liv elihoods and actively participate in community life. Exempting their businesses from duties and taxes is a crucial step towards this goal,' said Wanyoike.All Kenyans were reminded that PWDs should be treated with dignity and respect with the NCCK Chairperson encouraging the public not to hide children with disabilities but to support them.Wanyoike challenged PWDs to be courageous and go for leadership roles across various sectors. He particularly encouraged them to actively participate in political matters and also present their views on the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill 2024.Source: Kenya News Agency
