Niger finally accepts the new ambassador of Benin in Niamey, a year after his appointment

The new ambassador of Benin to Niger, Gildas Habib Bignon Agonkan, appointed to this post since June 14, 2023, was finally able to present his credentials to the Nigerien authorities on August 6, 2024.

According to the Nigerien Press Agency, it was in the presence of his closest collaborators that the Nigerien Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bakary Yaou Sangaré, received a figurative copy of the letters accrediting Gildas Habib Bignon Agonkan as Benin’s ambassador to Niger.

Mr. Agonkan was appointed a month before General Abdourahamane Tiani came to power in Niamey. Since this event, relations between Benin and Niger have become strained due to the position of Beninese President Patrice Talon, a supporter of repressive measures against Niger and against Tiani’s power.
