Normal activities have returned to the port city of Mombasa after Tuesday's chaotic protests.The Tuesday protests were allegedly hijacked by criminals who had a field day bringing the town to a standstill. Businesses were looted including a chemist located along Nyerere Road.Five private vehicles parked along Nyerere Road were set ablaze by the criminals after their attempt to loot a nearby restaurant was thwarted by a pistol-wielding owner of the restaurant.A spot-check by KNA on Thursday showed business in the CBD was back to normal as most shops and banks were open.The coastal city has not witnessed any protests today though security was heightened with police patrolling major streets.A few shops were partially closed for fear of looting, and most traders along Digo road and Sheikh Jundan road were standing guard with clubs to deter criminals from taking advantage of the protests to loot and vandalize properties.County Commissioner Mohammed Noor has assured residents and visitors of security an d most of the suspects who looted and destroyed properties on Tuesday have been arrested and arraigned in court.The CC further revealed that they were leveraging Close-Circuit Television (CCTV) around the city to arrest and bring to book more suspects who broke the law during the protests.Source: Kenya News Agency
