Garissa: Police in Garissa have impounded 88 pieces of 25-kg bags of contraband sugar and detained two probox vehicles that were ferrying the consignment along the Nunow - Garissa road. According to Garissa Town sub-county Police Commander Samuel Boit, the drivers of the impounded vehicles fled into nearby bushes after a chase by police officers who were on patrol.According to Kenya News Agency, the vehicles and the contraband sugar have been towed to the Garissa police station as investigations commence to arrest the suspects. The police have formed a multi-agency team to investigate the matter, aiming to determine if the sugar was licensed and how it entered the country. Commander Boit noted that contraband goods sometimes involve illegal firearms, ammunition, and other dangerous weapons, urging citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, especially during the festive season.Boit issued a stern warning to business people engaged in illegal activities, emphasizing the importance of adhe ring to legal guidelines for importing goods into the country. He highlighted that government officials at border points are responsible for ensuring that incoming goods are declared safe and duties are paid.Additionally, Boit assured citizens that the police are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of the area during the upcoming holidays.
