North Eastern Regional Commissioner (RC) John Otieno revealed comprehensive strategies aimed at containing the trade and import of contraband trade into the country.
The commissioner emphasized the urgent need to curtail the contraband trade, which has been identified as a significant revenue source for militant groups, posing a threat to national security.
Otieno highlighted the substantial revenue losses incurred by the government due to contraband trade.
He stressed that tackling this illicit activity was crucial to disrupting the financial lifeline of militant groups operating in the region.
The RC was addressing the press at a Wajir hotel after a meeting with the Security Intelligence Committee to review security issues plaguing the region.
The administrator emphasized the importance of maintaining close collaboration with the governments on the other side of the borders to effectively combat cross-border crime.
Otieno at the same time, underscored the gravity of Sexual Based Violence (SBV) and Gen
der Based Violence (GBV) as criminal offenses.
He warned that individuals involved in such offenses would face legal consequences and discouraged addressing these crimes through informal channels like the Maslaha program.
Expressing concern about illegal border crossings, Otieno assured the public that security officers are actively working to identify and apprehend those involved, particularly those suspected of having ties to criminal groups.
The commissioner also announced measures to protect contractors working on major roads in the region, including the Isiolo through Kutulo to Mandera route.
He emphasized the importance of safeguarding government projects and assured security officers would be provided with the necessary resources to ensure the uninterrupted progress of these initiatives.
National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs) have been instructed to conduct barazas (community meetings) to enhance public awareness of government policies and programs.

ding the County Commissioner, Deputy County Commissioners (DCCs), the Assistant County Commissioners (ACCs), the regional security team, and Chiefs from all sub-counties in Wajir.
