Turkana: The government, in collaboration with the Mennonite Church, has completed the final phase of a relief food distribution initiative, assisting over 1,300 families affected by hunger in Turkana County. The two-day operation aimed to address food insecurity in the region, particularly in Kanamkemer in Lodwar and the Kakuma Refugee Camp, through emergency aid and long-term strategies.According to Kenya News Agency, the distribution was overseen by Turkana Deputy County Secretary Joseph Nyang'a, who emphasized the ongoing necessity of food distribution due to harsh climatic conditions and persistent droughts. Nyang'a highlighted the government's efforts to promote sustainable solutions such as irrigation, livestock support, and agriculture alongside emergency relief.Senior Assistant County Commissioner for Turkana Central, Andrew Mutuma, encouraged recipients to utilize the aid effectively, urging them to keep children in school and ensure registration for Social Health Insurance.Francis Ojwang, Dir ector of Missions at the Kenya Mennonite Church, stated that the relief was made possible through donations and support from the church's peace and development arm, Mennonite Development Services. He stressed the importance of addressing both physical and spiritual needs through such initiatives.For beneficiaries like Samuel Emanman, the program provided significant relief, while individuals like Chaku Change at Kakuma camp noted the assistance would help offset reductions in humanitarian support.
