The County Department of Housing and Urban Development is implementing a project to replace asbestos roofing in Kaloleni B Estate, Nakuru Town East Sub-County, to improve its appearance and combat asbestos-related health issues.
Speaking during the site handover of the project,Mr. John Kamau, Senior Chief Officer for Housing, emphasized the project’s alignment with Governor Susan Kihika’s manifesto on improved livelihoods and urged residents to collaborate with the contractor.
Member of County Assembly Sakwa Neto praised the county government for recognizing the health risks of asbestos roofs, a naturally occurring mineral used in construction due to its strength, durability, and fire-resistant properties.
However, when materials containing asbestos are disturbed or damaged, such as during maintenance, renovation, or natural wear and tear, they can release tiny asbestos into the air. These airborne fibers can be easily inhaled into the lungs, where they can cause serious health problems over time, includin
g cancer of the lungs.
An environmental expert John Miana appealed to the contractor to ensure that the asbestos is properly disposed of because the fibers are so small and lightweight, they can remain suspended in the air for long periods, increasing the likelihood of inhalation.
Additionally, he said due to the serious risks associated with asbestos exposure, it’s necessary to handle the materials with caution and to follow proper safety protocols when dealing with them. The county officials confirmed that they are aware of the hazards and the hired contractor would follow all the laid down procedures.
