Tears and Chants as Raila’s Body Arrives at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium, Kisumu

Kisumu: Raila Odinga’s body arrived at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium, Mambo Leo in Kisumu, triggering an emotional wave across the lakeside city, as thousands of mourners burst into wails and chants of ‘Baba! Baba!’. The military chopper ferrying the remains of the former Prime Minister touched down at 8:45 am, bringing activities in the lakeside city to a standstill.

According to Kenya News Agency, from the streets of Kondele to Mamboleo, crowds lined the roads waving flags and singing patriotic songs, as long queues formed towards the stadium. Inside the packed arena, emotions ran high as Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers, dressed in full ceremonial uniform, moved the flag-draped casket to the viewing area.

Mourners watched in silence, some on their knees, others weeping uncontrollably as the military honour guard performed its solemn duties. A heavy security presence is being maintained with military, police, and NYS officers manning entry points and patrolling the grounds.

Red Cross personnel and County emergency responders are also on standby, attending to those overwhelmed by emotion or fatigue as the day’s heat builds up. Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, ODM officials, and family members led mourners in receiving the body.

Other senior officials include Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary (CS) Opiyo Wandayi, Interior PS Dr. Raymond Omollo, Kisumu Senator Prof. Tom Ojienda, and Kisumu Central MP Joshia Oron, among other leaders. Members of the Luo Council of Elders, clad in traditional regalia and carrying fly whisks, are also on standby to perform cultural rites to welcome home the region’s most revered son.

The Stadium is awash with orange colour as thousands of mourners clad in orange outfits continue streaming in, many carrying portraits of the former Prime Minister and waving placards. The arrival marks the beginning of Raila Odinga’s final homecoming, with thousands expected to pay their last respects before the body is taken to his home in Bondo Siaya County for final rites and internment.

For many in Kisumu, this moment represents more than the passing of a political icon – it is the farewell to a man whose voice defined Kenya’s democratic struggles and whose influence will echo across generations.
