Three Kenyan Counties Unite to Transform Waste into Revenue

Kathwana: The County Governments of Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly tackle waste management and establish a facility that will convert waste into a revenue-generating resource. The agreement was formalized at the Kathwana Headquarters, where host Governor Muthomi Njuki emphasized the importance of regional collaboration in addressing shared challenges.

According to Kenya News Agency, the partnership aims to process the approximately 1,350 tonnes of waste generated daily by the three counties, with 57 percent of this being organic. Governor Njuki highlighted that the initiative will not only enhance environmental management but also create job opportunities, particularly for youth, through the production of organic fertilizer.

The MoU includes the creation of a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to engage the Jospong Group from Ghana, known for its expertise in waste management. This SPV will manage the implementation of the project and seek additional partners to expand the initiative.

Governor Cecily Mbarire of Embu praised the collaboration, emphasizing the shared commitment to regional solutions. She noted that the partnership reflects a unified development agenda aimed at transforming waste management challenges into opportunities.

Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma described the initiative as a step toward aligning with the national Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). He stressed the importance of public participation to ensure the project’s success in promoting job creation and environmental sustainability.

The governors reiterated their dedication to enhancing regional cooperation, which they believe will strengthen their bargaining power for resources, fostering innovation and sustainability in waste management.
