Treasury Allocates Sh390bn for Teacher Employment

Migori: The Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Economic Planning, John Mbadi, has announced that the Treasury has been allocating Sh390 billion annually to the Teacher’s Service Commission (TSC) for the employment of teachers. Mbadi shared this information as the Chief Guest at the 35th graduation ceremony of the Migori Teacher’s Training College (TTC), celebrating the achievements of 648 graduates.

According to Kenya News Agency, Mbadi emphasized that the country’s economic trajectory was positive, with plans to increase funding in the education sector to create more teaching jobs. He encouraged graduates to remain patient for government deployment, assuring them that opportunities would arise soon. Furthermore, he praised Migori TTC for ranking among the top three in the recently concluded KNEC examinations.

Mbadi reiterated the government’s commitment to fully implementing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which he described as a predictable education system aimed at enhancing practical
skills. He highlighted the growing need for teachers as the population increases, underscoring the importance of directing more resources to the education system.

The Treasury has also been allocating Sh96 billion for capitation for primary, junior, and senior secondary school students to secure the students’ future. John Chivile, Chief Principal of Migori TTC, stated that the graduates have been trained to manage the CBC syllabus effectively, emphasizing the system’s focus on innovation and practicality.

Chivile called on the national government and National Government Constituency Development Funds (NG-CDF) to provide bursaries and scholarships to TTC students struggling to afford college fees. Union of Kenya Civil Servant Secretary General and Nyatike Member of Parliament Tom Odege echoed the need for the TSC to employ teachers based on their graduation year, highlighting the frustration of unemployed graduates.

Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko urged the national government to enhance the appeal of the tea
ching profession by offering better salaries to motivate teachers. He lauded Migori TTC for training exceptional teachers prepared to impart skills to the next generation. The 2024 graduating class received diplomas in early childhood and primary education, boasting a commendable 96 per cent pass rate.
