The Uasin Gishu County Government has embarked on a massive road construction programme across the county in a bid to uplift agriculture, boost trade, and enhance job creation.
Already, over 800 kilometres of new roads have been graded in a programme that was launched in November last year.
This is part of the 220 ongoing projects involving compacting marram roads, drainage works, the installation of culverts and box culverts, and the construction of new bridges.
Governor Jonathan Bii, speaking during an inspection of ongoing works along Kalyet-Toloita Road in Moiben Ward, Moiben Sub County, said that the ongoing programme under the 2022-23 financial year had a target of 1000 kilometres of new roads across the county.
In his manifesto, the governor listed roads and infrastructure as key pillars of economic development, as good roads are very important for both wheat, maize, and dairy farmers.
‘As a county government, we are committed to implementing such massive projects, especially on roads leading to trading centres and key facilities like hospitals and markets,’ Bii noted.
According to the County Roads, Transport, and Public Works County Executive Committee Member (CECM), Eng Joseph Lagat, working on more than 800 kilometres in seven months is good traction of the 3,300 km of all roads under the county government.
‘In total, we have 220 ongoing road projects at the moment, 30 of which are here in Moiben Sub County and eleven of which are ongoing in Moiben Ward,’ said Lagat.
The residents urged the county team and the contractor to expedite and complete the road projects within their area before the onset of the heavy rain season.
