Journalists have been urged to embrace the highest standards of journalistic integrity in the current technological world to counter fake news, misinformation, and disinformation from the audience.
Information, Communications, and The Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo, speaking when he presided over the 3rd Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) Eldoret Campus graduation ceremony, indicated that communicators have a duty to be vigilant guardians of accuracy and authenticity through fact-checking, source verification, and maintaining a commitment to truth.

‘In an era where information flows at a rapid pace, with the ability to impact public sentiment with a single viral message, your role as communicators becomes increasingly important,’ said Owalo.
The CS said that communicators have the ability to shape public opinion, challenge negative soc
ietal norms, and foster positive change.
He urged the 41 graduands in film and video programme production to embrace the opportunities that technology presents for storytelling and audience engagement.
‘Experiment with new mediums, harness the power of virtual reality, and explore innovative ways to connect with the audience. The digital realm is a canvas waiting for your creative expression, and your ability to leverage technology will set you apart in the competitive world of mass communication,’ he noted.
Owalo pointed out that technology has changed the way people share information, tell stories, and connect with the world.
Additionally, he said social media, online platforms, and digital tools have become integral to the dissemination of news, entertainment, and diverse perspectives.
The CS further said that communicators in the realm of mass communication are not mere observers but architects of information, shapers of narratives, and guardians of truth who bear the responsibility of wielding the p
ower of communication with integrity and purpose.
‘You are not just passive witnesses to these technological advancements, but more critically, architects of a bold digital future with the power to reshape the African narrative. With this power comes great responsibility to use technology ethically and responsibly,’ he added.
