Medical students from Mount Kenya University (MKU) will now be placed on industrial attachment at the Kenyatta University Teaching Research and Referral Hospital (KUTRRH), following a partnership agreement between the two institutions.Through the collaboration, MKU staff will also be able to access specialised care at the Level 6 health facility, according to the University's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi.Speaking during the signing of the Mou between the University and KUTRRH, the VC said 42 MKU medical science students have already been placed for clinical attachment at KUTRRH.He said other areas of partnership between the two institutions include research and innovation promotion, as they seek to improve the skills set for their students.'We are also working on having joint workshops in areas of communicable and infectious diseases because we believe building strong partnerships will benefit not only our students but also ensure we churn out skilled medical professionals,' said Prof. Ja ganyi.The VC at the same time disclosed plans to partner in Cancer research and other medical fields, noting that while they offer high-quality training in medical disciplines, KUTRRH edges out in having state-of-the art facilities that can help out in innovations.'Let us get the best out of this deal because we believe KUTRRH has cutting-edge facilities that our medical students will use to train,' said the VC, who was accompanied by Prof. Peter Wanderi, who is in charge of Training and Linkages at MKU.He said with a student population of more than 60,000 across its campuses, MKU has the opportunity to get into more partnerships across the globe, adding that as a pioneer private university offering medical sciences faculty, the university has established linkages with Germany and Austria, among other foreign countries, for the training of nurses.KUTRRH Chief Executive Ahmed Dagane said some of the key areas earmarked for strengthening through the MoU are training, capacity building, and internships f or health workers and students in both institutions.Source: Kenya News Agency
