Nyeri: Gisambai Ward came alive with colour and creativity as residents joined the rest of the world in celebrating World Food Day 2025 under the theme ‘Hand in Hand for Better Food and a Better Future.’
According to Kenya News Agency, the event was organised by the Department of Agriculture and served as a vibrant showcase of local innovation, featuring a wide range of agricultural products and technologies developed within the community.
Exhibitors displayed food crops, fruits, indigenous vegetables, and well-nurtured livestock, highlighting the importance of soil health, crop fertility, and proper livestock feeding. Women’s groups and youth associations proudly presented traditional vegetables, fruits, and livestock, while agribusiness firm Mara Grow Limited demonstrated black soldier fly farming and azolla cultivation, both key innovations for sustainable animal feed production.
Other displays included vertical gardens and irrigation systems that showcased climate-smart and resource-efficient farming, reflecting the community’s commitment to sustainable agricultural practices.
Speaking during the exhibition, County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Julius Maruja commended the exhibitors for their creativity and resilience. ‘The future for better health starts at the community level,’ he said. ‘What we are seeing here today is innovation with purpose, food that is affordable, nutritious, and locally produced.’
The celebration underscored Vihiga County’s proactive approach to food security, emphasising that healthy food systems are essential for building resilient societies.
By spotlighting community-driven agricultural initiatives, the event reinforced the message that the path to a food-secure future begins with empowered, innovative local farmers working hand in hand for sustainable growth.
