Mbeere south: Jeremiah Njenga and Ruth Wakabu emerged victorious in the 3rd Edition of the Mwea half marathon, held inside the Mwea National Game Reserve in Mbeere South, Embu County. Njenga achieved his first competitive title in the men’s 21km race, completing it in 1:05:24. He surpassed veteran runner John Mwangangi from Machakos, who finished second with a time of 1:25:26, and Alexander Njae from Embu, who came third clocking 1:05:35.
According to Kenya News Agency, Njenga expressed his joy over this milestone, describing it as the start of his ambitions for greater success in the future. “This is my first competitive victory, and it gives me confidence to aim higher. My goal is to break into national and international races,” Njenga stated.
In the women’s category, Wakabu from Nyahururu took the lead with a time of 1:13:31. Close on her heels was Lydia Naliaka from Embu, finishing in 1:14:44, while Regina Wambui secured third place with a time of 1:15:41. Participants noted the challenging course, characterized by rough terrain and intense heat, which tested their stamina and led to a few dropouts.
The 10 km races also delivered excitement. In the men’s category, Meru’s Esitel Mike completed the race in 30:46, ahead of Marsabit’s Cyrus Morogo, who finished in 31:04. In the women’s 10 km race, Winfred Mbithi claimed victory with a time of 35:53, followed by Mary Munanu at 36:45.
Philip Nzangi, the event organizer and Makima Ward Member of the County Assembly (MCA), praised the marathon’s positive impact. Since its inception in 2023, the event has generated funds for scholarships, benefiting over 150 vulnerable students. Nzangi also highlighted the marathon’s role in nurturing emerging talents, particularly among school students.
