Residents of West Pokot have been sensitized on court processes in an effort aimed at promoting legal literacy and ensuring that locals understand their rights and responsibilities within the judicial system.
The sensitization session occurred during a visit by a judicial officer to Kacheliba and Konyao markets in North Pokot sub-county, West Pokot county, with the goal of empowering them with the knowledge and resources needed to navigate the court process and access justice effectively.
At the Konyao Market in Alale division, located in the Pokot North sub-county, the team of judicial officers, led by Chief Magistrate Benard Ondengo, observed that a significant number of people lack a comprehensive understanding of their legal rights and struggle to navigate the court system effectively, and there was a need to educate the community on court processes.
The chief magistrate emphasized that by imparting education and disseminating information regarding court procedures, individuals can enhance their abili
ty to seek justice when required.
He emphasized that raising awareness within the local community contributes to the development of a legal system that is more inclusive and equitable for all community members.
He observed that raising awareness among the local communities and their elders showcases a proactive strategy for advancing access to justice and nurturing community relations.
He mentioned that they also visited the North Pokot sub-county with the purpose of engaging with the residents and raising awareness about the forthcoming establishment of a court in their area.
The local residents were strongly advised by the chief magistrate to refrain from taking matters of the law into their own hands. Instead, they were encouraged to rely on legal institutions and the rule of law to assist them in resolving their disputes. This approach is crucial for maintaining social order within the community.
He emphasized the importance of resolving legal disputes through official channels.
”Your cases will be
heard and decided based on legal principles, ensuring equitable outcomes for all parties involved,” he said.
During an interaction with the media, Julius Mnang’at, a Konyao resident, commended the chief magistrate for taking the initiative to educate the community about court proceedings.
He emphasized that the court sensitization event, led by the chief magistrate, was the first of its kind in Konyao village.
He expressed gratitude for Chief Magistrate Ondego’s efforts to raise awareness and called for increased cooperation with the court to enhance legal education and ensure access to justice within their community.
Pauline Chemisto suggested that the establishment of a court in the Konyao region would enhance the proximity of justice for the local community and that they would no longer have to travel long distances to access court services, making the legal system more accessible and responsive to their needs.
