In the bustling KCC area of Kericho Town, amidst the rhythmic clatter of wrenches and the aroma of motor oil, one figure stands out, Daisy Otieno, clad in a grease-stained overall, deftly maneuvering under the chassis of a vehicle.

At just 22 years old, Daisy is not just a mechanic but a trailblazer, challenging norms and blazing a new path in the traditionally male-dominated realm of automotive repair.

Daisy’s journey is a testament to resilience and passion, born from humble beginnings as an orphan with an unwavering fascination for engines since her early years.

‘My curiosity for machinery began in primary school,’ Daisy shared with KNA, reflecting on her deep-seated desire to explore a field where women are pioneering a path.

Guided by her elder brother, himself a seasoned mechanic and mentor, Daisy said, she honed her technical skills and pursued formal education at Ahero Vocational Training in Mechanical Engineering.

She disclosed that her graduation in 2022 marked the beginning of her professional
career path in automotive engineering in Kericho town, where she faced the formidable challenge of establishing herself amidst skepticism in a male-dominated industry.

However, she swiftly dispelled doubts with her adeptness and meticulous approach to intricate repairs and maintenance tasks with her reputation for precision and reliability soon spreading among truck and lorry drivers across the county, cementing her garage as a trusted bastion of automotive expertise.

Despite the initial hurdles, Daisy pointed out that her determination and skill have proven to be lucrative earning at least Sh3,000 a good day from her labour, demonstrating not only her technical proficiency but also her ability to thrive in a competitive market traditionally dominated by men.

‘This financial success not only supports my livelihood but also enables me to invest in my vision of providing a brighter future for disadvantaged children in my community, just as a way of giving back,’ added Daisy.

The challenges she faces daily s
uch as navigating the ever-changing weather patterns of Kericho and overcoming the financial constraints of acquiring tools and spare parts are testament to her resilience and entrepreneurial spirit.

She expressed optimism that each day presents a new opportunity for growth and learning, further solidifying her reputation as a trusted and sought-after mechanic.

‘As I continue to grow my business, I aspire to inspire young women to pursue careers in mechanics. What men can do, women can do better,’ Daisy affirmed.
