ANGATA BARRIKOI: The National Assembly Security Committee held a critical peace meeting at the Angata Barrikoi-Gwitembe border between the Maasai and Kuria communities, to resolve a long-standing border dispute. This region has been plagued by conflicts that have claimed over 30 lives in the past two decades. Speaking during a community engagement in Angata Barrikoi, Trans Mara South Sub-County, the committee chair, Gabriel Tongoyo, who also serves as the Narok West Member of Parliament, reiterated the government's unwavering commitment to fostering peace and addressing insecurity in the area.According to Kenya News Agency, Tongoyo stated, 'Our visit is focused on uncovering the root cause of these conflicts and developing a comprehensive plan for enduring peace.' He emphasized that the committee's mission was prompted by grievances raised by local leaders, who sought the government's intervention to resolve pressing issues in the community. Tongoyo said that the primary challenges affecting the region incl ude land disputes, insecurity, and property destruction. He assured residents that the government is determined to prevent further loss of lives and damage to livelihoods.'The government is here to serve all people equally. It is time for us to work together, embrace our neighbors, and celebrate the diversity that strengthens our nation,' Tongoyo said. He urged the communities to prioritize unity and understanding as pivotal tools for fostering harmony. Kuria West MP, Mathias Nyamabe, a fellow committee member, highlighted that the team had listened to representatives from both sides of the border Angata Barrikoi - Gwitembe in Kuria East and had begun formulating sustainable solutions. Nyamabe urged the locals to remain patient and peaceful as the government accelerates efforts to resolve the disputes.To bolster security operations and enhance the safety of residents, the committee handed over a patrol vehicle to local security agencies. This move is aimed at empowering law enforcement to respond more eff ectively to incidents and maintain peace in the region. Local representative Johanna Kamilan called on the government to expedite its interventions, emphasizing the urgency of restoring normalcy and ensuring lasting solutions for the affected communities.The National Assembly Security Committee's proactive approach has ignited hope among residents, who have endured years of tension and violence.
